Day 5 - Emblems of the Word of God

Hallelujah, gonna have a good, gonna have a good, gonna have a good day. That is such a great song that you wrote.

That you all know that Pastor Sherry wrote that song.

And it gets into your spirit. You can't. And it just gets into your spirit.

But what a great thing to get into your spirit. And that will take you through the day. Amen, amen. You just tell yourself today, have a good day.

Well, hello everyone.

Glad to have you today. My name is Pastor Sherry Morris and this is my handsome, wonderful brother, David Ansel. And we are here from Soldatna, Alaska. That is where we live. We have a church here in Alaska called Trinity Christian Center.

And it is 30 something over, almost 40 years old here. We've established a church here in Alaska.

And our dad was the founding pastor.

And so we've been in ministry all our lives since we were little kids all our whole life. I was born in it. Dad was an evangelist and then he's pastor churches.

So God has been so good to us and we are just blessed that we have the opportunity here to take you through the Bible through this year and walk you through every single day so you can get through the Bible and feel like, hey, I can start this day good. Amen. Amen. Talk about just coming into the new year. Have you ever made a new year's resolution? You're going to read your Bible this year.

And by the way, what a great New Year's resolution to me. That's right. But I'll tell you what, we've done this before. We have.

And there's no easier way to get through the Bible than to join us every day. And we're going to walk you through it. And God is going to fill you so full and alive. Amen. You're going to be rejoicing each and every day with us. Amen. Because God is good and the joy of the Lord is your strength. Amen. Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before. Yes, it is. Amen. Every day with Jesus, I love him more and more.

Okay.

Okay.

Saves and he keeps me. Right?

He's the one I waited for.

Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before. She's being silly.

That's good. Let's have a good day today. Today's a good day to have a good day. Amen. That's right.

Let's go, Dave. You guys are in Genesis chapter five.

All right.

They're not in chapter five. No.

We're on day five.

In Genesis chapter 11, start in verse one, read through chapter 13 to verse four. And then we're going to go into the New Testament. We're still in Matthew chapter five, verses one through 26.

And Pastor and I have been taking you through a Psalms and Proverbs every day. Every day. So today, Pastor is going to take you into Psalms five, verses one through 12. Okay. I'm going to read the first three verses and then we'll go into a commentary.

Listen to my words, Lord. Consider my sighing. Listen to the sound of my cry for help.

My King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, Lord, you will hear my voice. In the morning, I will present my prayer to you and be on the watch. I just want to remind you, do you have your Bibles? Do you have your devotional out? Do you have your little tablet out, Dave? It's so good to take notes. Amen. So in verse three, when he talks about early in the morning, several passages make it clear that David's prayer time is early in the morning.

David awakens early to the music of harp and sultry, as in also Psalm 57, verse eight. He also says he will seek God early because of his hunger and thirst for God. First thing in the morning, that's what he wants. He wants to be in the presence of God. That's powerful to me. That's a friend of God. And you know, when you're a friend of God, God seeks for those that will be his friend, that will stick with him through thick and thin. That's not going to be flighty when it gets hard. We're going to stick it out. We're going to go through this. Amen. So you can also find Psalm 63, verse one. If God is the first thing on our minds in the morning, he can direct our entire day according to his will. How many want to be in the will of God? I want to be in the will of God. So we're going to go on to verse four.

"For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness. No evil can dwell with you. The boastful will not stand before your eyes. You hate all who do injustice." Now, I'm going to do a commentary here in verse five. The Hebrew word for foolish here is halal and refers to something shining or boasting. The Psalmist is saying a proud and boasting person, listen to this, will not stand in God's sight as pride always comes before destruction and before a fall. And you can also write down Proverbs 16, 18 on that. Okay, now let's read verse six. "You destroy those who speak lies.

The Lord loathes the person of bloodshed and deceit."

So on this is the English translation mentioned leasing twice here and in Psalm four two. The Hebrew word for kazab refers to a person speaking deceit or falsehoods with their mouth. Okay, now we're going to move down to verse seven. "But as for me, by your abundant graciousness, I will enter your house. At your holy temple, I will bow in reverence for you."

Hallelujah. As for me, by your abundant graciousness, I will enter your house. At this time, there was no temple in Jerusalem.

Solomon would build the temple after David's death.

This temple would be patterned after the heavenly temple where God is worshiped in heaven. And also write down Isaiah six,

colon one dash two and also the book of Revelation chapters four and five. All right, now we'll go into verse nine.

"For there is nothing trustworthy in their mouth. Their inward part is destruction itself. Their throat is an open grave. They're flattery and they flatter with their tongue."

So in this one, a throat being an open sepulcher.

Boy, you know what a sepulcher is, right? He called those Pharisees sepulchers. Their tombs whitewashed there. Look nice on the outside, but inside there are a bunch of filthy old man's stinky bones, right?

So a throat being an open sepulcher is a metaphor for negative words, oh my goodness, of the wicked being like an open grave and leading to death. Wow, that speaks volumes to me because life and death is in the power of the tongue and out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Are we speaking death? Are we speaking like sepulchers? Is it coming out of our mouth? Is it disparaging things coming or terrible things coming out of our mouths? We need to remember this. Now what are we speaking?

So Christ compares the Pharisees to whitewashed, white sepulchers full of dead man's bones, and you can read that in Matthew chapter 23 verse 27. Okay, now we're going to head down from 9, 10, 11, 12.

Okay, "Make them pay God,

have them fall by their own schemes, scatter them in the multitude of their wrongdoings, for they are rebellious against you." But in verse 11, "But rejoice," jump up, spin around, "all who take refuge in you, sing for joy forever, and make you, and may you shelter them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you. For you bless the righteous person, Lord, you surround him with favor as with a shield." This is powerful. So David discovers throughout his life that following righteousness leads God to God's favor.

That is good. And God's favor protects a person like a shield encircling him. What also comes to my mind is the scripture that talks, "The prayers of a righteous man availeth much." So right here it says, "God's favor," he says, "David discovers throughout his life that following righteousness leads to God's favor, and God's favor protects a person like a shield encircling him." Amen. That's powerful, David. Wow. That's so powerful. Do you have some good Proverbs for us today? I do have great Proverbs. I can't wait to hear them. Great Proverbs today. One or more?

24 through 28. We're in chapter 1, verses 24 through 28. I'm going to read the commentary out of Perry Stones. That's good. commentary.

Thank you, Perry. Yes, thank you, Perry.

Okay. "Solomon warns that if people remain simple or lack understanding and wisdom," remember we started in Proverbs, the beginning of knowledge was to fear the Lord, and were to gain wisdom.

So if they lack understanding and wisdom,

they will follow their own desire,

which will lead them to calamity.

The Hebrew word for simple is pithé and can allude to someone who is a silly or easily seduced by someone else.

So it's very important that we dig into the Word of God.

We gain understanding and gain wisdom because in this Proverbs today, this is why. I'm going to show you. It's very powerful. Ready? Here we go.

"I called you so often, but you wouldn't come.

I reached out to you, but you paid no attention.

You ignored my advice and rejected the correction I offered."

Wow.

Wow. Yeah, I just want to take a pause right there. Wow.

Advice,

right here.

God is calling to you, "Come,

read my word." Yes. "Faith comes by hearing, hearing of the Word of God." If you reject the time that it takes for you to get into His word,

this is His rebuke coming

in verse 26. He says,

"So I will laugh when you're in trouble." I will mock you when disaster overtakes you,

when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster engulfs you like a cyclone, and anguish and distress overwhelm you.

When they cry for help, I will not answer.

Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.

Wow. That's something. How important is it for us to get into the Word? It's a very important day. To be covered by what you just went over in Psalms. Yes, so important.

So good. Wow. So good. Guess what? Today,

our devotional is on the emblems of the Word of God.

So there's a lot of emblems in the Bible that won't go over, but there's emblems of God's Word. Yes.

So let's go into Hebrews chapter 4 verses 11 through 13.

Go ahead and read that, Dave. Can we go into Psalms again first? Sure. After 5 verses 1 through 12? Sure. Sure.

"For the Word of God is alive and powerful.

It's sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword." That's in Hebrews. Oh, I'm sorry. Yeah, that's Hebrews. I'm sorry. That's okay. No, we're good. That's okay.

"Cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow, it exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God." Amen.

"Nothing in all creation is hidden from God." Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes. Yes. "And he is the one to whom we are accountable." What I love about this is that, you know, when you think about a two-edged sword,

and Perry has a good commentary on that if you want to look at in Hebrews chapter 4 verses 11 through 13, I love this because it's like this two-edged sword. It cuts us between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. How many of you have ever filleted a fish? I mean, it was like you're opened up. You're filleted open. God knows your thoughts.

Amen. He knows every detail about you. I mean, down to your DNA, everything, your thoughts. He said he knows everything about us. And he exposes the innermost thoughts and desires.

Everything in all creation is hidden from God.

Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. I like how he talks about the two-edged sword being powerful because he uses the word of God plus uses us as the other side of the sword.

Does he explain that in there?

I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure it's in there.

Yes. This is kind of long, but here we go.

This is commentary on just verses 12 and 13.

The Greek word for quick comes from the verb "zaeo" and refers to life or being alive.

The word for powerful in the Greek is kind of energies from which we derive the English word for energy, meaning active or energized. The word "two-edged" is literally rendered "two-mouthed."

This may be because the word of God was first spoken by God, but must afterwards be spoken by a person to release the power of the sword of the Spirit. You see that in Ephesians 6, 17? The word "piercing" refers to going through.

The dividing of soul and spirit reveals that Scripture separates the carnal mind from the spiritual mind, and the joints in the marrow remind us that the word of God reaches into the innermost parts of the human being. All humans have thoughts, but also have intents that emerge from the heart.

Intents refers to the ability to think about or consider a certain action.

The Bible can discern and dissect both thoughts and intents. Nothing can be hidden from Christ or from God's written word. It's powerful.

So the Bible is more than a religious book. It's the living word of God. And our text said that the word of God is alive and powerful. And when you read and study the word of God, it imparts the life of God into your spirit, Dave. That is so good. So the psalmist said, "Thy word I've hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee." So the word of God does more than bring information to the head.

Listen to this. It brings transformation to the heart.

That's powerful, isn't it, Dave? I love it.

The word of God does more than bring.

So most Christians severely underestimate the power of the word of God.

The Bible says in Psalms 138,

in the Amplified version, "For you have magnified your word together with your name." Amen.

(...)

Jesus said in Matthew 24, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." So David, throughout the Bible, God gives many symbols to help you better understand both the purpose and the power of the word of God in your life. So the word of God is compared to a hammer,

a fire, mirror, seed, laver, lamp, rain and snow, bow, gold, and food. Did you get that?

It has the power to create faith and eternal life, Dave. This is so good. So God uses common things, things we all understand, to illuminate the richness and the power of His word.

Because He knows we need it to be sometimes simple.

Amen?

So let's not be quick to set aside or treat it casually. That's right. Come on. That's good.

Let's just have a little, let's say this little prayer. Heavenly Father, thank You for taking time throughout Your Scripture to express and explain the power and importance of Your word. Thank You for putting Your word into active use in my life. I pray that You would increase my knowledge of Your word. Amen.

Isn't the Lord like, it's just like a hammer like that, like the word of God going deep into my heart.

Sometimes I've asked the Lord just to brand it inside of me. I want it inside of me so that when I go through something or I need Him, I can go always back to the word of God because I know the word of God is powerful and it's alive, it's living, it's truth, it's strength, it's authoritative. You can always go back to the word of God for you.

I love it, Dave. I love how His word is so, so rich and so full. I love it. And it just, for your daily walk, I don't know why this song keeps coming to my heart,

but there's an old hymn that's, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."

Well, you know, nowadays we have all these high powered flashlights that you can see, you know, 200 yards out.

But that's not what God said about His word. And I think there's a spiritual significance to why He said His word is like a lamp unto your feet. Well, lamp casts a light that's just enough to light your pathway.

So no matter what rocky edges or sticks or whatever you have to walk through, it's enough light to get you one day at a time with Him. His word daily walking in His word. Sometimes we want to look so far ahead that we miss the stumbling block right in front of us. And by picking up His word every day and just digging and meditating on His word, you light your path. It keeps your path straight. You don't trip up. You don't stumble. You don't take the wrong turn.

He is all that you need. Amen. He is all that you need. I want to look up Psalm 119, 105, and it's the same scripture, Dave.

Psalm 119,

105. I think it here. Psalm 119,

105. Yeah. And it's,

a light unto my path. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." I just love the word of God.

Yes. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Amen.

It's so good. If you know another song, there's another song that we sing about the word of God that...

What is it, Dave? My mind is...

It's just... I'm drawing a blank here, but it's a song about the word of God being inside, your breath of God being inside.

Word of God speak.

That's a good one too. You want you to pour down like rain,

washing my eyes to see your majesty, to be still and know. Amen. There's so much about being in the word of God and knowing God, knowing God. He's such a powerful...

He just is powerful. He's a thought of, but he can be your best friend too. You can feel strength, you feel comfort. It's like a blanket of warmth when you know that he's right there by you. He's your protector. He's your guide.

He gives you wisdom.

Amen. Praise God. He'll never leave you. God is so good.

He's worthy of honor, glory, honor and praise. Amen.

Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

We worship his mighty name today. Isn't God good? Can you just worship him right where you are? Can you just tell him how good he is today? You just love on him today.

Praise the Lord. He's there to touch you. He's there to heal you. He's your healer. Hallelujah. I love what Jeremiah said. He says, "Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed. Save me and I'll be saved for you are my praise." I love that. I love that because everything, everything that's inside me, every breath that I take,

every moment I'm awake, this is what David would say. He says, "I need God. I love you, Lord. I worship you, Lord." And that's what it's about, is getting in his presence, going to the secret place, shutting the door where he's at.

He's there waiting for you, just waiting.

Amen. Give him your day. Give him your time. Amen. And just expect waiting on the Lord. There's nothing like waiting on the Lord.

His word says, "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They will mount up with wings of eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not fade."

So teach us, Lord God. Teach us, Lord, to wait. Praise God. Take that time. Take that time. Open up his precious word.

Pray that the Holy Spirit reveals his word to you. It is alive. It is powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword. And it will cut between the soul and the spirit, between the joint and the marrow. God loves you today. Yes, he does. He loves you today. There's a reason why you're here. There's a reason why you're tuning in, that you're listening. There's a reason why you've got your Bible out.

Because God is going to do something in your life today. He's speaking to you right now.

And this is the right path. This is the right course. This is the right thing to do.

This year,

take time. Make time for Jesus. He's all we've got. He's all we've got, really.

Nothing is more important than the time that you spend in his presence. Amen.

And if you've never received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, but you want to, then just say this prayer with me today. And we'll lead you in this simple prayer. But believe it with all your heart. Just bow your head and just mean it. And say, "Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you right now in the mighty name of Jesus.

I thank you for your love. I thank you for your tender mercies that are fresh and new every morning.

Father, I need a Savior. I'm a sinner.

Please forgive me of all my sins. Please come into my heart.

Cleanse me from every sin. Cleanse my mind. Cleanse my body. Heal me, Lord. Heal me from my sins. Heal me from destroying my body.

Father, heal me and I'll be healed. Save me and I'll be saved. I believe that you died on the cross for my sins. I believe you rose again and that you're coming back. Thank you, Lord, for this day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Well, Dave, it's going to be a good day, especially if you've said that prayer. Amen. If you said that prayer. Amen. Reach out to us. We want to bless you. We want to help you in your journey with the Lord. God loves you so much and so do we. Amen. That's right. We love you. Be blessed. Be encouraged in the Lord. Amen. We will see you tomorrow. Amen.
